Jeremy Heilman's BIM/IPD Thesis Reflection |
|
Being apart of HPR Integrated Design for the 2011/2012 senior BIM/IPD thesis program has not only been fulfilling, but a great learning tool for my future career. As the construction industry moves forward, many new technologies are being created to enhance the design and construction experience.
As a team, each member takes a share in the profit or the consequences. This project, when given to us, was not in complete design. The HPR designers and construction manager had to work together to ensure the completed design was within code, within budget, completed on-time, and headed towards achieving a LEED Gold certification.
Working together as a team allowed us to be more involved in developing the alternative design packages. Bringing a team together for each design aspect created an opportunity for good communication in each design aspect. Utilizing 3D coordination helped to reduce and minimize any rework and redesigns, much like in the industry. In the process of design, constructability and sequencing were always in mind. Our main goals were to deliver a higher quality product for the budget allotted while improving the schedule. HPR's designs were initially over budget, but with the construction manager as member of the BIM Team, HPR was able to improve the schedule by 17 workdays, resulting in a constructive design that came in under budget.
In the end, HPR found more benefits than struggles while working as a BIM Team. Through collaboration and communication, HPR was able create a successful project.
I would like to take this time to thank Mortenson Construction, PJ Dick, and DPR Construction for the information and help that they provided for the construction manager support, and all the contacts made through each of the HPR designers for their help and support in making this a successful project. I'd also like to thank the professors and advisors of HPR. Finally, I'd like to thank the HPR team, as well as their friends and family for their support. |

The Capstone Project Electronic Portfolio (CPEP) is a web‐based project and information center. It
contains material produced for a year‐long Senior Thesis class. Its purpose, in addition to providing
central storage of individual assignments, is to foster communication and collaboration between
student, faculty consultant, course instructors, and industry consultants. This website is dedicated to
the research and analysis conducted via guidelines provided by the Department of Architectural
Engineering. For an explanation of this capstone design course and its requirements click here. |

Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of this BIM/IPD group. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design. |
